Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the bloody attack that took place in Nice, France on Thursday, describing it as an “heinous” terrorist act and said its perpetrators “cannot define Muslims.”
French authorities said a knife-wielding attacker killed three people in a church in the Mediterranean city in southern France, prompting the country to raise its security status alert to the highest level. French media cited sources familiar with the investigations who claimed the attacker was a twenty-one-year-old Tunisian immigrant, but authorities did not provide any details.
“It was a heinous and criminal act that could not be justified in any way and an affront to all our values,” Trudeau said Thursday at a news conference after a hypothetical meeting with European Union officials. “The criminals, terrorists and cold-blooded murderers who carried out these attacks do not represent Islam,” he added. “They don’t know the identity of Muslims in France or Canada or anywhere in the world.” Trudeau also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
Earlier in the day, Quebec Bloc leader Yves Francois Blanchett asked Trudeau to issue a strong condemnation of the attacks, arguing that the prime minister was not strong enough to condemn the earlier attacks.
