With the announcement of the beginning of economic and trade relations between Israel and Sudan, this country broke a decades-long boycott and hostility since Friday, moving from what is known as the “Three No” (no to negotiation, peace and recognition of Israel) to an attempt at rapprochement and establishment of mutual relations between the two countries.

Although the transitional government has been emphasizing, for more than two months, that “normalization” with Israel returns to Parliament (which has not yet been formed) despite the passage of a year since the change in the country and the removal of the Former President Omar al-Bashir, the train of relations The exchange apparently took off, and Sudan became the third country to announce the end of the state of hostility with Israel this year.

As for who opened the door to this rapprochement with the administration of US President Donald Trump, it was a Sudanese woman, whose name was Najwa Qaddah al-Dam.

The former ambassador of Sudan served as an advisor to the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, and was very close to him, which opened the door to her relationship with Israel, which is why a few months ago she initiated several contacts to arrange a meeting between the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the head of the sovereign council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

As part of its gratitude for her efforts, Israel sent a plane last May to evacuate her due to her infection with the Coronavirus and deteriorating health, but doctors confirmed at the time that her condition did not allow her to travel, for what later died, due to complications of his Covid-19 infection.

However, the road opened by Omdurman’s daughter, west of Khartoum, remained impassable until a few days ago culminating in the announcement of the Sudanese-Israeli agreement.

Notably, Najwa was born in Omdurman and passed school stages there, then moved to the Sudanese capital, where he completed his university studies and enrolled in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

She later worked on the peace dossier in South Sudan, and her name came up when Al-Bashir awarded her the Two Niles Medal in 2018 and she obtained a Sudanese diplomatic passport with the rank of ambassador for special missions.

Although she was relieved of her duties through the Empowerment Removal Committee last year, she continued to work on the Israel relations file, according to The Independent.

Complete the path

So the path opened by that Sudanese ambassador seems to be completed several months after her death. Israeli Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen announced in press releases that “a Sudanese delegation will soon visit Tel Aviv and then head to Khartoum, leading an Israeli delegation.”

He also confirmed that Israel would cooperate with Sudan in various areas and looked forward to the establishment of security cooperation between the two countries and an exchange of goods and investments.

In turn, Ofir Gendelman, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reiterated Sunday that an Israeli delegation will arrive in Khartoum in the coming days to finalize the agreements.

Netanyahu thanked the head of the Sudan Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok, for their landmark decisions regarding the relationship with Israel.

It was also announced yesterday that an Israeli delegation will travel to Sudan in the coming days, after the two countries agreed to take measures to normalize relations.

Contrast and controversy

It is noteworthy that the agreement negotiated by the United States and announced on Friday generated some discrepancy among several military and civil leaders of the Sudanese transitional government regarding the pace and scope of the movement towards Israel.

The Sudanese prime minister wants the approval of the parliament, which has yet to be formed, to advance the expansion of this process.

Notably, the US President’s decision to remove Sudan from the US list of terrorist-sponsoring states paved the way for the deal.

Trump concluded the Israel-Sudan deal during a phone call a few days ago with Netanyahu and Hamdok.
