On Thursday, the French judiciary charged Tariq Ramadan with the rape of Monia Rabouj in 2013 and 2014, making her the fifth woman to be tried in court for sexual assault against her.

The Paris prosecutor had requested the indictment in spring 2018, but the judges suspended the decision on the Rouge case. His testimony led Tariq Ramadan, who was in custody, to confess for the first time to having extramarital affairs, which he described as “consensual”.

Defense attorneys Nabila Othman, Uday Al-Hamamoushi and Philip Ohayon said upon leaving the interrogation session in the Paris court that “there has been no new element” in the investigation two years ago, adding that what happened was a “indictment for organizing the confrontation in the future.”

As for the plaintiff’s attorney, Eric Moran, he said what happened was “definitely satisfactory” and represented a “great turnaround.” He added: “Research has shown the extent to which my client’s statements are reliable and consistent.”

And he added, “The Criminal Procedure Law does not recognize the formal accusation: only serious and identical indications that the judges registered today.”

Monia Rabouj’s testimony played an important role in the charges against Ramadan. The 47-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against Ramadan in March 2018 accusing him of raping her nine times in France, London and Brussels, between 2013 and 2014.

Tariq Ramadan (58 years old) has been arrested since he was charged on February 2, 2018. Ramadan was approved on June 5, after Rbouge testified that he had relationships with her and other people who testified.

He was charged with a third, and then a fourth, on suspicion that he had sexually assaulted two other women in 2015 and 2016.

Judicial supervision was recently relaxed, so he has to go twice a month to the police headquarters. A parallel rape case was opened against him in Geneva in 2018.
