Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp justified his decision to switch his three offensive players Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino at the same time in Ajax’s Champions League game.
The Reds began their continental career with a beautiful 1-0 win over Ajax in the first round of the group stage.
“I do not doubt the quality of the players,” Klopp said in comments, especially on his club’s website.
“We defended after Salah, Mane and Firmino went out 4-5-1, and this means that it is clear that both bands must really participate in the defense.”
“The moment you win the ball, there are incredibly large areas to counterattack and we really thought it made sense to bring in physically fit players.”
Takumi Minamino, Gerdan Shaqiri and Diogo Jota participated in place of the trio of Salah, Mane and Firmino in the 60th minute.
He continued: “The three who participated were in very good condition, and this helps a lot and I saw that they helped a lot.”
“Shaqiri won all the broken balls, which is very special, and Takumi was on both fronts and worked very well between the lines. Diogo managed to stop the opponents in the singles,” he continued.
“We created some opportunities and unfortunately we did not finish them, but the situation was completely good,” added the German coach.
Liverpool finished second in the table in Group D, behind Atalanta, who crushed Denmark’s Maitland by a quartet, outside the rules.
