A West Ham United fan accused of racism against Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has been banned from attending football matches for three years after his conviction.
The incident dates back to January 2019, when a video clip appeared on social media, in which a Shawakish fan made offensive racist statements towards Salah while taking a corner kick in the two teams’ match in the English Premier League.
The Metropolitan Police reported that 48-year-old Bradley Thomwood appeared in Times Magistrates Court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to a racist offense aggravated against public order.
The English police explained that the fan was punished with a ban from attending football matches for three years and a fine of 400 pounds.
Thomwood was called up in July after being recognized by officials during West Ham’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool on January 29, 2019.
West Ham will offer its fans educational sessions to try to reform their views, while reserving the right to support the ban indefinitely if those efforts fail.
The club had made it clear in a statement when the incident occurred, saying: “At West Ham United, we operate a zero tolerance policy towards any form of violent or abusive behavior.”
“We are an all-encompassing football club. Regardless of age, race, religion, creed, marriage, pregnancy, motherhood, gender, sexual orientation, gender change or disability, everyone is welcome at the London Stadium.”
“Anyone who commits a racist crime will be informed of their details and will face a life ban from the London stadium,” he continued.
A West Ham spokesperson concluded: “There is no place for this type of behavior in our stadium.”
