A social media star in China died after her ex-husband doused her with gasoline and set her on fire during a live broadcast.

The ex-partner reportedly broke into the star’s home armed with a machete and gasoline before attacking her in front of her relatives in mid-September.

The video blogger, known as Lamu, 30, was reported to have burns to 90% of her body and was left fighting for her survival for more than two weeks. She fell into a coma and, 16 days after the accident, doctors announced her death the night before.

The police arrested Lamu’s ex-husband, who was mentioned in local media as Tang, but his motives are still unclear. Some Chinese media reports indicated that the suspect was seeking revenge against Lamu for initiating the divorce due to domestic violence. The couple had two young children.

Lamu was a popular video blogger living in Maeska Village, in mountainous Aba Prefecture in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

With her account on Douyin, the Chinese version of the “TikTok” application, she earned more than 782,000 followers and 6.3 million likes before being attacked.

Some of Lamu’s videos documented his life in rural China. In Lamu’s latest video, which was uploaded on September 14, she was performing a traditional Tibetan song to express her gratitude to her fans.

According to the Beijing Youth Daily, the screen during Lamo’s regular concert later that day suddenly turned black and her fans heard her scream.

Her account was inactive for two days before Lamu’s sister Zuma posted information about the attack.

Zuma launched an online appeal for financial help pleading with the public to save Lamu. The Good Samaritans program donated around 1 million yuan ($ 147,546 / £ 114,038) to the family.

Doctors announced Lamu’s death around 9 p.m. Wednesday after the treatment failed, according to a police statement.

The statement said that Lamu was assaulted by her ex-husband, Tang, at 8:50 p.m. on September 14.

She was rushed to the People’s Hospital in Aba prefecture and then transferred to Sichuan Hospital on September 17 for better medical care.

Police said they arrested Tang on suspicion of premeditated murder on the night of September 14. She added that she is conducting more research.

The Lamu family said they spent more than 60% of the donations on his treatment and would return the rest of the money to the fundraising platform.

Her family says Lamu returned to the rural city to care for her ailing father in 2018 after hiding from her violent ex-husband in Chengdu.
