In a move that saw Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as punishment for his recent actions, the British “Times” revealed that Washington plans to transfer its means of war from its largest foreign base in Incirlik in Turkey to the Greek island of Crete.
Among the files kept by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his visit to Greece this week is a review of the proposals that provide for the transfer of the main US means of war, from the Incirlik air base in Turkey, to the island of Crete, where the United States seeks to strengthen its military presence in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Times believes Pompeo’s visit to Greece represents a sign of the United States’ impatience with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s repeated provocations, most notably his insistence on buying Russian S-400 anti-aircraft systems, despite strong opposition from The United States and Turkey’s allies in NATO (NATO).
Incirlik, which was established at the height of the Cold War near the Turkish border with Syria, has long been a vital and important base for America’s strategic interests in the Middle East. It has recently been used as the scene of US-led airstrikes against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
