Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais made a controversial statement after his team qualified for the quarterfinals of the AFC Champions League.
Al-Ahly slashed past rival Shabab Al-Ahly Dubai of the United Arab Emirates with a penalty shoot-out in the Qatari capital Doha, and continued his Asian adventure.
After the match, Al-Owais was asked about the mistakes Al-Ahly made in the match, and he replied: “We changed his flying cheek and gave the club back.”
He added on Al-Kass TV: “We have reached the quarterfinals. We congratulate each other and close the mistakes and fix them.”
He concluded: “God willing, we will win all the next matches.”
The statement raised the discontent of many followers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as it was seen as a reference to rival Al Hilal.
The AFC had banned defending champion Al Hilal from the AFC Champions League a few days ago, for not attending with enough players to his final group stage match, after the Corona virus hit his ranks and infected the most of its players.
And Walid Al-Faraj, the Saudi journalist, tweeted on his Twitter account:
Captain Muhammad Al-Owais .. Rejoice in the qualification of your team and this is your right, but can’t you be happy without this statement?
Your brother Al-Hilal came out with well-known circumstances, some regulatory and others healthy. Do you think that the champion of the championship and the great representative of our country deserves your comment?
I know you slipped the pass.
My advice, I apologize for you. “
