The death toll in a failed prison break attempt in the Egyptian capital rose to 4 police officers after another police officer died from his injuries.
Egypt’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that four gunmen were also killed during the failed attempt to escape from the high-security Tora prison south of the Egyptian capital on Wednesday.
A security source clarified that the head of investigations at Tora Prison was seriously injured and taken to the intensive care ward of a hospital.
The Interior Ministry statement did not explain the details of the escape attempt, but did mention the names of the dead, who were sentenced to death in cases of “terrorism.”
Three of the prisoners named in the statement were sentenced in 2018 for founding and joining an armed group called Ansar al-Sharia, and for killing at least 10 policemen, in a series of attacks between August 2013 and May 2014.
The fourth prisoner was convicted in 2018 for the murder of a Christian doctor, and during the investigations he confessed to joining the organization called “Islamic State”. .
Tora Prison is known as one of the largest Egyptian prisons, and it is a high security prison located at the southern tip of the capital, and it has several buildings and the degrees of security of its buildings vary.
In a related context, the Egyptian Interior Minister, Major General Mahmoud Tawfiq, visited the prison and inspected the crash site.
Tawfiq assigned the Ministry’s Inspection and Control Sector to examine the circumstances of the incident and present an urgent report on it, and review the insurance procedures in the prison area, especially on death row.
There was no other version of the Tora prison incident other than the government account.
Ansar al-Sharia announced its training in Egypt in July 2013 and said that the removal by the army of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in the same month was a “declaration of war on religion” and threatened to use violence to impose the Islamic law.
Attempts to escape from prisons are rare in Egypt and did not clearly occur except during the events of the January 2011 revolution, and there were conflicting reports on how they occurred and who was responsible for them.
