Kim Kardashian joined dozens of celebrities who announced that their social media accounts were frozen in protest against the spread of “hate and misinformation.”
The move is part of the “Stop Hate for Profit” campaign launched by human rights activists.
Celebrities will freeze their accounts for 24 hours on Wednesday.
“I cannot remain silent as these platforms continue to allow the spread of hatred and misinformation, launched by groups to sow division and divide America,” Kardashian said.
He added that spreading disinformation on social media “has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy.”
Other celebrities joining the boycott campaign include Leonardo DiCaprio, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry, who said on their Instagram account: “I can’t sit idly by while these platforms turn a blind eye to groups. and publications that spread unpleasant false information. “
Actor Ashton Kutcher, who views millions of his accounts, joined the campaign and said: “These tools were not made to spread hatred and violence.”
Organizers of the campaign accuse Facebook and Instagram of not doing enough to stop the spread of hate speech and misinformation.
The campaign focused on Facebook, which also owns the Instagram and WhatsApp platform, which last year generated nearly $ 70 billion in ad revenue.
Thousands of leading businesses and civil rights organizations are participating in the campaign.
And Facebook released in June that the company would place a warning on posts that are potentially harmful or misleading based on their informational value.
Company founder Mark Zuckerberg said the platform would ban ads that contain allegations of threatening other people with “people of a certain race, nationality, religious affiliation, sect, sexual orientation, gender identity or immigration status.”
He wrote in a statement that the 2020 elections were headed “to be hot”, adding that his company “will take extra precautions to keep everyone safe and informed.”
Facebook shares clearly fell after the boycott campaign, with the media reporting that Zuckerberg’s net worth fell to $ 7.2 billion.
