US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Sunday that the United States continues to call on the European Union and European countries to designate Hezbollah as a “terrorist organization” or to ban it altogether.

In a statement posted on the ministry’s website, he said that the United States welcomes Serbia’s intention to designate Hezbollah as a “terrorist organization.”

He also added, “Serbia’s announcement of Hezbollah’s classification is another important step limiting the ability of this Iran-backed group to operate in Europe.”

He explained that Hezbollah continued to plan “terrorist” attacks, buying military technology and raising funds in Europe.

He said the United States continues to call on the European Union and European countries to recognize the fact that Hezbollah is a “terrorist organization” as a whole, and not to differentiate between the so-called “military” and “political” wing.

The US State Department called on all countries to take the necessary measures to prevent Hezbollah from carrying out its activities and to detain its agents and supporters in Lebanon and abroad.

Sanctions to support Hezbollah

And last week, Washington announced sanctions against two former Lebanese ministers for supporting “Hezbollah” and participating in acts of corruption.

The US Treasury said in a statement that the sanctions include the two ministers of the former Lebanese government, Yusef Fenianos and Ali Hassan Khalil, for supporting Hezbollah and its involvement in corruption.

The US Treasury said the two former ministers remain in force despite their departure from the government, namely the former Lebanese government’s Public Works Minister Youssef Fenianos and former Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil.

The US sanctions on the two Lebanese ministers include freezing assets and real estate.
