A new fire broke out for the third time on Thursday inside the free market zone in the port of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, according to local media.
Fires and plumes of smoke rose over the capital, Beirut, where a state of panic prevailed among citizens and passers-by, and some evacuated buildings surrounding the port, according to the Lebanese daily An-Nahar.
Although the causes of its outbreak are not yet known, the Lebanese network “LBCI” reported that it had exploded in a warehouse containing oil deposits and tires.
Lebanese “Al-Nahar” quoted a security source as saying that the fire was caused by “burning of oils and tires.” Don’t be afraid of it.
The Lebanese Army warned citizens of the need to move away from the vicinity of the port and clear the road due to the intensification of the fire.
Civil Defense teams rushed to the port to extinguish the fire, amid concern over the resumption of the August 4 disaster.
This occurred two days after the second fire that broke out in the port of Beirut. At that time, fire trucks were seen running towards the scene, while a video of the fire was broadcast.
And a large number of Lebanese were terrified, fearing a repeat of the scenes of August 4, when a violent explosion rocked the port.
Subsequently, the Lebanese Civil Defense stated that the fire was due to the burning of the landfill and remains of the explosion at the request of the Lebanese army, which requested support from the civil defense in case the fire spread.
According to official figures, the first explosion in the port on August 4 killed 191 people, injured more than 7,500, displaced more than 300,000 citizens and destroyed thousands of homes.
