Typhoon Hishin heads to southwestern Japan on Saturday, where authorities ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents and canceled about 600 air flights warning of strong winds accompanied by heavy rains and high waves.
Haixin is expected to arrive Saturday night with winds of 290 km per hour, which will turn it into a “violent” storm.
In the afternoon, the typhoon was approaching Okinawa, in southern Japan, and was supposed to head toward Kyushu in the west of the country on Sunday night or Monday morning, according to the local weather agency.
And it forced Japan’s Typhoon “Hishen” authorities to suspend the search for dozens of missing sailors after a boat carrying cattle sank in another storm after two crew members were recovered.
“Haixin” is expected to be stronger than “Mysak” that caused the wreck.
Japanese public television reported that airlines canceled about 100 flights on Saturday and another 484 that they planned to fly on Sunday, linking southern and southwestern Japan with other parts of the country.
And the automaker “Toyota” announced the suspension of its activities until at least Monday at 3 factories on the island of Kyushu, while companies “Canon” and “Mitsubishi Electric” are considering taking similar measures.
Meteorological Department official Yoshihisa Nakamoto said during a press conference that there is “a risk of violent winds, torrential rains, high waves and violent storms”, calling for evacuations and “the utmost caution.”
For his part, the government official, Yuhai Takamura, said during the conference: “There will be a disaster, it is for sure.”
And 4,600 people in Taromizu, on the island of Kyushu, were called to flee their homes quickly, while authorities asked residents in other parts of the island to prepare to leave, and on the island of Minamidaitojima, east of Okinawa, 1,300 people were called to evacuate their homes.
