A cargo ship with a crew of 43 and carrying nearly 6,000 cows capsized on its way from New Zealand to China after its engine failed due to a storm in the East China Sea.
The Japanese Coast Guard said it had rescued a crew member, First Officer Sarino Edvarudo, 45, of the Philippines, on Wednesday night while searching for the ship.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman said Edfarodo said one of the ship’s engines failed before it was hit by a strong wave and capsized.
He added that the crew were instructed to wear life jackets, and that he jumped into the water and did not see any of the crew before his rescue.
The Coast Guard said the crew included 39 from the Philippines, two from New Zealand and another from Australia.
Images from the Coast Guard showed a person in a life jacket being pulled out of the rough sea in the dark.
The ship “Gulf LifeStock 1” sent a distress call from an area west of the island “Amami Oshima” in southwestern Japan on Wednesday, amid strong winds, strong waves and heavy rain as a result of Hurricane Maesak, which was heading towards the Korean peninsula.
The ship left New Zealand on August 14, carrying 5,867 cows, with a crew of 43, bound for China.
