The Spanish League issued an official statement today, Sunday, about the position of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and his desire to leave the club for free without paying the value of the penalty clause.
Messi has a contract with Barcelona that expires at the end of the 2020/2021 season, and the contract includes a penalty clause that allows the Argentine player to leave the Camp Nou if he pays 700 million euros.
Radio Cadena Ser claimed yesterday Saturday that Messi has the right to leave Barcelona for free, since the last contract signed with Barcelona includes playing with the Catalan shirt for 3 seasons + the possibility of an extension for an additional 20/21 season, adding that the agreed penalty clause therefore does not apply for the 2020-2021 season. La Liga issued an official statement, which included support for Barcelona’s position on the eligibility of € 700 million should the Catalan captain decide to leave the club during the current summer transfer period.
The statement reads like this: Regarding the various interpretations (some contradictory to each other) that have been published in recent days in the different media, and related to the contractual situation of Lionel Andrés Messi with Barcelona, La Liga explains:
1) The contract is currently in force and has a penalty clause that applies in the event that Lionel Messi unilaterally decides the early termination of the contract, which was implemented in accordance with article 16 of Royal Decree 1006/1985, of June 26, which regulates the special employment relationship of professional athletes.
2) In compliance with the applicable regulations and following the procedures in these cases, the League will not implement the visa procedures for the player if he has not previously paid the amount of said article.
It should be noted that Messi had previously informed the Barcelona administration of his intention to leave Barcelona officially.
