While the International Data Corporation (IDC) says smartphone shipments have fallen 11.7 percent, analysts at Counterpoint Research and Canalys indicate they have fallen worse, at 13 percent.

Whatever the numbers, this means that the global smartphone market has fallen at the fastest rate in history.

The companies shipped fewer than 300 million smartphones in the first three months of 2020, with IDC, the industry’s leading watchdog, monitoring the smart device market, saying shipping numbers reached 275.8 million.

China, which was the first country to suffer an outbreak of the Corona virus, experienced the biggest regional decline, as its annual smartphone shipments fell by more than 20 percent, according to IDC.

But Canalys’ separate research showed a slightly lower figure, saying smartphone shipments in the world’s largest market fell 18 percent year-over-year.

Meanwhile, Counterpoint indicated that China also lost part of the market due to the epidemic, falling 4 percent from the previous year.

IDC said Europe and the United States also faced a significant drop in smartphone shipments, dropping more than 18 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

The foundation noted that problems in the huge Chinese market, which makes up almost a quarter of global shipments, have turned into a “global economic crisis.” As the world’s second-largest economy begins to slowly recover, a complete shutdown in other parts of the world has crushed demand for smartphones, as consumers have become more cautious about their spending.

Samsung continues to occupy a leading position in the smartphone market, followed by Huawei and Apple.
