The outcome of the US presidential election has reached a critical moment, with the gap between Donald Trump and his rival, Joe Biden, narrowing in the swing states.
Trump, the Republican candidate, claims that he won the election and promised to go to the Supreme Court alleging fraud without providing evidence.
Earlier, Democratic candidate Joe Biden said he was “on his way” to victory.
Millions of votes have yet to be counted and no candidate can claim victory at this time. There is no evidence of fraud.
With this tension in the country, the end result may remain unknown for several days.
More than 100 million people had cast their vote in an early vote before Election Day on Tuesday, setting the stage for America’s record turnout in a century.
What are the results of the presidential elections so far?
Trump defied pre-election polls, performing better than expected, but Biden is still in the running and the bottom line remains unresolved.
In US elections, voters cast their votes in state, not state, competition.
The candidate must obtain at least 270 votes from what is known as an electoral college. Each state has a certain number of votes according to its population. The total number of electoral college votes is 538.
Trump is expected to decisively win the state of Florida, a huge boost for him in his reelection bid.
The BBC hopes that Trump will win another conservative state, Texas, where the Biden campaign has been seeking a surprise victory.
However, Biden can take Arizona, which was a conservative state. Fox News and The Associated Press expected Biden to win the state, while CBS, the BBC’s US partner, said Arizona was leaning toward the Democratic nominee.
Trump’s loss of a former republic could be a serious setback.
The battlefields of the three rust belt states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which Trump won four years ago, still seem to tilt either way.
Pennsylvania, along with Florida, is crucial for Trump if he wants to avoid defeat.
And the vote counting process is also in a state of excitement in the two major changing states on the East Coast of the United States, Georgia and North Carolina.
According to the BBC predictions, Trump will maintain his control of Ohio and Missouri, known as “Bill Weather States” (leading states) because they often wait for the winner in elections.
He also hopes Trump will win in Nebraska, despite Biden winning one of the electoral college votes there, which could be decisive in determining the outcome.
And there have been no surprises in any other state yet.
In addition to the race for the White House, the two houses of Congress are also in dispute. Republicans try to keep the majority.
Republicans lost one seat in the Colorado Senate, while they won another in Alabama.
Both Senate Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, Republican, and Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, were re-elected.
While the House of Representatives is expected to remain under the control of the Democrats.
What do the two candidates say?
Trump held a party outside the White House that was attended by 100 guests. In a speech at 2:30 am local time (7:30 GMT), he said: “We are preparing to win this election. Frankly, we won this election.”
Then he denounced a “great fraud in our country” without providing evidence of it, and added: “We will resort to the Supreme Court.”
“We want all voting to stop,” the president added, apparently referring to the suspension of counting of ballots sent by mail, which some states can legally accept after Tuesday’s elections.
Millions of mailed ballots remain to be counted and there is no evidence of fraud.
On the other hand, the Joe Biden campaign condemned the president’s statements, calling them “flagrant, unprecedented and incorrect”, and called them “explicit efforts to extract the democratic rights of American citizens.”
Earlier, around 1 a.m. local time, Biden predicted victory from his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.
“We feel comfortable with what we have accomplished and what we are doing,” said the Democratic candidate.
“We will be patient until the arduous task of counting the votes is finished. It will not end until all the votes are counted.”
As his opponent spoke, Trump posted a tweet from the White House that read: “We are ahead, but they are trying to steal the election.” Twitter described Trump’s post as potentially “misleading about an election or other civil process.”
A new non-expandable fence had been installed around the White House before Election Day. Companies in the US capital, Washington, DC and New York have also tightened the security of their facilities due to fear of riots.
As for Biden, according to the predictions of the BBC, he will keep his native Delaware, as well as the states of Minnesota, California, Virginia, New York, Rhode Island, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Mexico, Colorado, Vermont, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington DC.
CBS also expects a mile from Nevada, Maine, and Hawaii to Biden.
National opinion polls before Election Day had indicated that Biden was making steady progress, but they indicated convergence of competition in several states that will likely decide the outcome.
State outcome projections are based on a combination of exit poll results and votes that have already been counted, in most cases. It is only done if there is a lot of certainty about the results.
While the results remain close in other crucial states, such as Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina.
