Dr. Scott Atlas supports calls to play college football this fall: ‘We need to be rational here’

High school athletes are in the best position to play their sport safely during the coronavirus pandemic, Hoover Institution senior fellow Dr. Scott Atlas told Monday night “The Story”.

Atlas said he agreed with Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who tweeted Monday that people are “just as much, if not more, at risk” of contracting the virus if there is no college football this fall.

“Players will all be sent home to their own communities, where social distance is highly unlikely and medical care and expenses will be placed on the families if they want to contract covid19. [sic], “Lawrence wrote.

“He’s an incredibly mature, insightful young man,” Atlas said of 20-year-old Lawrence. ‘He immediately ignores something, which is the environment of college sports and athletes a very, very saber environment. They have health care. They are very controlled. There is accountability. They could not get a better and safer environment, no matter what environment you come from. ”

Atlas added that college students are at an age where they have little to no risk of the virus, while players as coaches with comorbidities have the option to choose them.

“We need to become rational here,” he said. “The risk for people at that age is less than seasonal. I mean, you really have to look at the data … You can not say that it’s all about science and then it’s at odds with science. “

“If people are scared or if they have comorbidities and are scared, I’m sure it’s ok for them to be able to choose,” he said. “But there’s no reason to quit here out of fear.”
