Does the first trailer suggest Bruce Wayne will face the Court of Owls?

The big episodes of the first trailer for “The Batman” were pretty obvious – the latest version of the Caped Crusader and The Riddler’s brand new Zodiac Killer-inspired reimagining. But as some high-eyed fans point out in the days since the trailer launched, an innocent detail could have revealed that it might also be the movie debut of another great Bat antagonist: The Court of Owls.

The moment comes 41 seconds later, when Commissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) Batman (Robert Pattison) passes a riddle by the Riddler (Paul Dano) on a crime scene – written in a Halloween greeting card. Directly aimed at Batman, the card is adorned with a very prominent cartoon Owl with golden eyes and a comic strip “Whoo?” along with the words “from your secret friend” on the front.

Of course, it does not necessarily refer to actual scoundrels. In fact, one of our first thoughts when seeing the map was that it was meant to be called “Batman: The Long Halloween”, the 1996-97 miniseries generally (though not always) considered the canonical sequel to Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One.” We’ll save this discussion for another time, but to sow it down, that story explores how some of Batman’s biggest enemies in his second year behind the hood began to open up. crawl.

But that’s why we’re not here. Read on for more on the possible hint, and just what the Court of Owls actually is.

1) So what the hell Is the Court of Owls?

Court of Owls Batman vs. Robin

Warner Bros. Animation

Made by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, if you have not heard of the Court of Owls, this is OK. They are one of the newer arc Bat villains, debuting in 2011 as part of the “New 52” continuity remake.

As Bruce Wayne discovers, The Court of Owls is an old conspiracy that dates back to the very founding of Gotham City itself. A secret society whose members come from the oldest and richest families of Gotham, the group has used clandestine violence and immense wealth since at least the late 1600s to manipulate city politics and retain the power of rich elites. Bruce even suspected her of murdering his parents at one point, but apparently there was no evidence.

The Court is served by murderers known as Talons, individuals abducted as children and raised to be fanatically loyal to the Court. Usually only one Talon was operational at a time, and when they got too old they would be killed by their replacement. In its debut story, the Court activates all Talons at once (do not ask, it’s magic) to take Gotham once and for all from Batman (it did not last), and since then a few individual Talons have proven to be difficult challenges for Batman.

Although Batman has clashed with them many times, they have never really gone away and in the current DC continuity they are now an international organization described as “the parliament of owls.”

When she appears in ‘The Batman’ it will not be her first appearance outside of the comics. Versions of it appeared in the Fox TV series “Gotham” and as the main villains in the 2015 animated film “Batman vs. Robin.”

Let’s go back to those possible hints.

2) The greeting card

That first, the main reason we do not really register the front of the card is that it is almost literally a blink-and-you-it moment. It’s hard to tell even if it’s an owl before it opens up to the actual riddle in the map, (Which fans have already solved, by the way.) However, viewers with a much better video recording managed to get a crystal clear screen and we admit that changes everything. Here’s what it looks like:

The Batman Court of Owls

This is a movie about how Batman establishes his reputation as “The World’s Greatest Detective”, we have a hard time believing that director Matt Reeves would go through all the trouble to make such a distinctive prop without it being a sort of of significance. So let’s get into what it is cow mean.

3) Batman’s Gauntlets

This may be more of a stretch, but many fans have indicated that in set photos released earlier this year, the gloves on Bruce Wayne’s “The Batman” suit look very much like gloves worn by the Talon with the name William Cobb. See for yourself:

This can of course just be a coincidence, we call it now simply because they, well, they look nice.

4) What Matt Reeves says

During the film’s DC Fandome panel last week, director Matt Reeves of ‘The Batman’ explained that part of the story reveals that Bruce Wayne exposes the deep-rooted corruption of Gotham City.

“You see [Batman’s] not having any of the effect that he still wants to have, ‘Reeves said. “And that’s when the murders start to happen. The murders begin to describe the kind of history of Gotham in a way that only reinforces what he knows about Gotham, but it opens up a whole new world of corruption that much further. But when that story begins to unfold, it touches, without its origin story, its origin. “

Uh, that sure sounds a lot like some kind of old conspiracy to us. And what is that about how the film “touches on its origins?” Remember how Bruce suspected they might have killed his people?
