Walker Buehler’s sudden absence from Dodgers’ summer camp has been a topic of conversation in recent days. After appearing in the MLB promo for the first day back, fans were unable to see Walker anywhere other than the photos taken on July 6.
Dave Roberts was asked about Buehler today at this press conference and it looks like he’s behind it. Compared to other Dodger pitchers, Buehler doesn’t seem like he’s ready and ready for the second game of the season.
I think it was Sunday, I think it was one more … facing batters in a live situation, so I would expect him to do the same BP live, but I would expect it to be a 2 more situation. And then after that, his next outing will be in an exhibition or in a game within the squad … I think he’s a bit behind the other guys, but once the season starts, what can we get at the additional launchers on staff will suffice.
Roberts has already confirmed this week that he will be able to load in some additional pitchers to give beginners more time to build up at the start. With that in mind, Buehler’s sure not to rack up to pitch more than a few innings for the Dodgers’ second game against the Giants. Buehler’s turn in the rotation is only ten days away.
Other Dodger pitchers have already racked up as many as six innings, including players like Clayton Kershaw and Ross Stripling. Buehler, on the other hand, was apparently not as smart as everyone else during the quarantine.
Certain other guys released during quarantine. I think Walker took some time off with the uncertainty and that was his decision and Mark was in tune with that. So the kind of prep period for Walker will only take a little bit longer … To get it when the season starts 3-4 innings with a few guys behind him will be fine.
As Roberts said, there is a good chance Buehler could still start the second game of the season. It may only be a few innings, but the Dodgers have the ability to be covered by the expanded bullpen.
