Christopher Eccleston was the actor who brought the Doctor in the modern era, but his tenure was short and (for many) controversial, and it would not have been surprising to see him never repeat his role. Fortunately, that will not be the case.

Announced today by Big Finish Productions, the company behind the excellent series of Doctor Who audio adventures, Eccleston will return to the world of the Doctor with a series of twelve (!) full-cast audio adventures. These adventures, set for release over four box sets, are scheduled to begin in May 2021 with the first volume.

“After 15 years, it will be exciting to revisit the world of Ninth Doctor, bringing back a character I love to play,” Eccleston said in a press release. Eccleston, famously, had a very hard time during his role as the doctor, and wrestled with the problems after the screen and personally fight for mental health, making his return as the Doctor feel especially triumphant. It is a victory over bad conditions and hard fight, as well as a return that fans will admire.

According to Jason Heigh-Ellery, chairman of Big Finish, this has been in the works for a while. ‘I first talked to Christopher about returning to the role of the Doctor at a fan convention in February this year. Christopher said he enjoyed meeting the fans and was glad that his Doctor was so fondly remembered. I’m so glad Christopher has decided to return to the role with us – and I’m excited to welcome him into the Big Finish family as we discover the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor. ‘

The first of four parts, each containing three audio adventures, is currently available for pre-order on The Big Finish website.
