Disney is making some major changes to its release schedule including indefinitely delaying “Mulan” from its August 21 release and delaying the release of future Star Wars and Avatar movies by one year.
On Thursday, the company said that theater closings and production closings during the global coronavirus pandemic caused it to make a number of adjustments to its list.
“In the past few months, it has become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release movies during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for ‘Mulan’ as we evaluate how we can effectively bring this film forward. to the public around the world, “a spokesman for Walt Disney Studios said in a statement Thursday.
Disney shares fell slightly in off-hours trading and fell more than 1%.
“Mulan” is currently listed as not established, which means its release is delayed indefinitely. This is the fourth time that the live-action film has been delayed since March.
With “Mulan” vacating its August release date, there are now no successful Hollywood releases for the month. “Tenet” moved out of its debut in August on Monday and has yet to announce a new release date. AT&T CEO John Stankey promised movie theater owners that Christopher Nolan’s spy thriller will have a theatrical release.
“New Mutants,” a 20th Century Fox feature film in the X-Men franchise that has been delayed for the past three years, appears to still be on the schedule for August 28, but depending on whether theaters will reopen next month. The film could either be pushed again or be delegated to an on-demand video release.
A number of smaller, independent features are slated for release in theaters. However, major theater chains like AMC may not be open to show them. Earlier Thursday, AMC announced that it has delayed its reopening plans until mid-August after “Tenet” left the calendar. It is not clear how he will react to the “Mulan” leaving as well.
AMC, like other major movie theater chains, has been closed since mid-March, waiting for a slowdown in coronavirus cases and new Hollywood content. AMC, in particular, had talked a lot about how the pandemic could bankrupt it.
Earlier this month, the exhibitor was able to reach a debt settlement that should help him remain solvent until 2021.
