For the Hargeeves brothers, the loss of their adoptive brother Ben (Justin H. Min) is ultimately what separated them. While Ben’s death remains a mystery in the universe of The umbrella academyMany fans have started to theorize that Ben could have died of suicide.
Ben Hargreeves’ death shattered the brothers
The umbrella academy tells the story of a family of adopted children with extraordinary superpowers. Under the supervision of Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the brothers are trained to use their powers to save the world. Sadly, Ben, also known as “Number 6” or “The Horror,” died before the end of the world occurred.
Still, fans catch a glimpse of Ben during Season 1 of The umbrella academy, thanks to Klaus Hargreeves (Robert Sheehan). Klaus’s ability to communicate with the dead allows him to see and hear Ben. Finally, Klaus discovers that he can also channel Ben’s abilities.
Ben did not have the earliest childhood
Sir Reginald Hargreeves was not the most vigilant father figure. In fact, he viewed his adoptive children more as scientific experiments than as family. While studying Ben’s skills during season 1, Reginald notes that he is “easily manipulable due to [his] enthusiastic, but naive, nature. ”

Vanya (Ellen Page) also made some cunning remarks about Ben while his abilities were unknowingly stunting. In her autobiography, Vanya says that Ben was “the kindest of my brothers, but I was eager to please my father.” He was easily manipulated, dragged into the little games of Father and Luther, and those two just let him die. ”
From Vanya’s perspective, Sir Reginald and Luther are supposed to be responsible for Ben’s death. This makes sense, considering the amount of guilt Luther (Tom Hopper) expresses experiencing during Season 1.
Gerard Way said they are all to blame for Ben’s death.
In February 2019, Gerard Way, who wrote the graphic novels of the same name with Gabriel Bá, told Forbes Ben that he was dead when he wrote it in the story.
“That was their role,” explained Way. “I always knew I was going to solve it. What happens The umbrella academy, it’s almost like improvisational jazz. You’re just making it up as you go along. I have a lot planned for eight volumes of this graphic novel, but some are still questions, ”including Ben’s death.
In May 2019, Way revealed more about Ben’s death. “” I think they may all be involved in his death, “Way told IGN. When asked for more clarity, Way could only say,” I’m not even quite sure I can reveal that. That is beyond spoiler because it also has to do with the comic. ” It seems fans will have to wait until Ben’s death is revealed in the comics.
Justin H. Min believes that Ben’s death is a mystery
Min has other thoughts about the death of her character. “I think nobody really knows [how Ben died]”He told Den de Geek in March 2019.”[Way] He has even admitted that he himself does not know absolutely. Could Ben have died of suicide?
Considering Ben’s headstone, “May the darkness within you find peace in the light,” his death could have been suicide. “[His headstone] it could easily refer to your internal mental health issues, ”theorized a Reddit fan.
Other fans think that Ben’s death could have been caused by the creature that lives within him and that it also functions as his superpower. “When we see him on the bench scene, he is reluctant and even disappointed when called, which leads me to believe that something with his powers made him ‘die’,” shared another fan on Reddit. “What if the eldritch entity coming out of it is sensitive, and Ben knows it?”
However, others believe that Ben’s death was an accident and that Sir Reginald and Luther are somehow to blame.
