Trebek says he is a normal guy and does not consider himself more important than other people. This belief is the reason why he waited so long to write about his life and career. Trebek’s humility had an impact on the way he presented himself at the beginning of Danger! In his book, he says he asked the announcer to refer to him as the host of the show instead of the star.
I am the typical product of my generation: a hard-working breadwinner who cares for his family; makes all the repairs he can for the house; enjoy watching television; and think a simple fried chicken, broccoli and rice dinner is fine, thank you very much. I have applied to work the same job for 36 years. I respect and like my colleagues and I have a family that I love very much. In this, I am not different from many other people. I have never seen myself as something special.
That is why if you hear Johnny Gilbert’s announcement at the opening of Jeopardy !, I am presented as “the host” instead of “the star”. I insisted on that when I took the job in 1984.
