Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release worldwide this November via the PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. And if it finally succeeds, it could very well set up a new bar for open world games just like that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt did that back in 2015, if at least that is the goal of CD Project Red. And so far it seems to be achieving this goal.
When The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released in 2015, it primarily sets a bar for storytelling within an open world, world immersion, and world realization. And again, CD Project Red looks forward to doing this with Cyberpunk 2077. We’ve known about the game for years, and yet we’re still hearing about new features that sound like they’ll be unbelievable when dropped or pitched.
For example, CD Project Red has confirmed that cuts do not have a fixed camera. This alone is not that big of a deal, but it’s what players can do with this camera that sounds like it could revolutionize how we think about cuts in a role-playing game.
In the September 2020 issue of the Official Playstation Magazine (via Sirus Gaming) it is revealed that players can influence how a scene plays out not only by the choices they make, but how they act. Players can, for example, search their environment for visual cues about what is actually happening.
For example, if you get stuck on the face of the NPC that you are talking to, you may not realize that someone else is coming after you to attack you. However, if you look around, you might notice this before it happens. However, too particular antsy or jump in certain situations will presumably also have its disadvantages.
At the moment, it’s a bit unclear how realized and comprehensive this feature is, because CD Project Red has not really talked about it, but it sounds like another level of immersion and player agency that RPG games, in particular, exclaimed for.
Cyberpunk 2077 is in development for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Google Stadiums. It is currently scheduled for debut on November 19th.
