Numerous football and basketball meetings in southeast Minnesota have been cited by Winona County Health and Human Services as sources for COVID-19 outbreaks.
The health department said the outbreaks were traced to events in Lewiston and Winona between Sunday, July 26 and Thursday, July 30. Anyone attending one of the following events is asked to sign up for a COVID-19 test and be quarantined for 14 days, even if the test returns negative.
– 26 July: unorganized basketball game at Crossings Center (170 S Fremont St.) in Lewiston
– July 27: morning football camp and evening basketball camp at Lewiston-Altura High School
– July 28: morning football camp and evening basketball camp at Lewiston-Altura High School
– July 29: 7-on-7 football at Paul Giel Field in Winona
– July 29: Lewiston Farmer’s Market
– July 30th: basketball camp at Lewiston-Altura High School
– July 30th: unorganized basketball game at Crossings Center (170 S Fremont St.) in Lewiston
The health department says “there is a potentially lower risk of transmission” at the Lewiston Farmer’s Market, and that the above meetings included individuals who “were in their infected period and may have been contagious but not yet symptomatic. . ”
The ages and number of people infected is unclear. As of the Minnesota Department of Health’s COVID-19 statistics Thursday, there were 254 cases and 16 deaths in Winona County, including two new cases reported Thursday.
The outbreaks recovering from sporting events come just days after the Minnesota State High School League voted to move the fall football and volleyball seasons to the winter / spring period from mid-March to mid-May.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health’s COVID-19 Youth Sports Counseling Guide, there should be no more than 25 players / coaches involved in in-game or out-of-game activities (training, practice).
