“I accept -” “- your nomination -” “- for President -” “- of the United States.” [cheers and applause] The conventions. “It’s like a lot of people are starting to take the race seriously.” “I’ve been to almost every convention since 1988.” “Read my lips.” “Normally a convention is wild.” But in 2020, things are a little different. “The pandemic has changed almost every aspect of the campaign by 2020.” ‘I think it defines the elections. And I think you see that in the way they approach the conventions. “” You would say it has caused an uproar, do political conventions not even matter? Can’t we do this whole process without them? “So, how did the conventions grow into the glasses they are today?” What do you mean? you, ‘shut up’? “And what will last this year?” Conventions have existed for about a century in various forms. “” 1944: The Democratic Convention in Chicago, Illinois, took over. , like, you would have these really dramatic nomination fights. “” I feel completely confident that I will be the winner in this convention. “” And fight floor. “‘I do not like anything!’ “Keep your hands off me!” “And things about platform and who should be allowed. The networks used to pay attention to these things round the clock, hammer after hammer. And most of that stuff is gone.” time has evolved the process. And now candidates are chosen based on the results of primaries and caucuses, so there are not many surprises. “And what happened to the conventions is that they are this kind of four-night ad words for the candidates – “” Thank you. “” – and their parties. “” If you believe we should be fierce and untenable and end terrorism, then you are a Republican. ” [cheers] But overall, that format hasn’t really changed. “The critique of conventions is that they are just kind of like a dinosaur.” [music, Los Del Rio, “Macarena”] “They are a relic of a past time of politics.” The challenge for campaigns this year – “Good afternoon, everyone.” – is how you almost wrap a substance and excitement “How do you do a convention in the middle of a pandemic?” “The campaigns have been really struggling since the pandemic.” “Good morning.” “Joe Biden is a helpless puppet -” “Contrary to Trump’s desire to campaign, Biden has been at home for the most part.” “The Democratic Party has approached the convention and Covid–” “Hey, good evening, Tampa.” “- much more conservative, small C, than the Republican Party.” ‘We have saved millions of lives. And now it’s time to open up, get back to work, OK? So what will actually happen? Now, the plan has changed – a lot. ‘The Democrats were hoping to have a big, splashy convention in Milwaukee. Then the virus went into. ”That the Democrats went to an almost completely virtual convention. “And we finally got the call that even Joe Biden would not really travel to Milwaukee to give his grant in person.” Instead, all speakers, including Biden, will now provide their addresses from across the country. And the RNC? “Republicans were hoping to hold the convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.” But after North Carolina demanded masks and social distancing rules, the RNC moved the major events to Jacksonville. Then things got nailed down in Florida. “I looked at my team, and I said, ‘The timing for this event is not good.’ “Well, then they will also be mostly virtual. And Trump will give his speech, accepting the nomination of the party from Washington, DC” The challenge for both of these conventions is, what can you do to win the US election? sitting already very tired from sitting on Zooms all day? What can you do to make sure they get along well with each other? “” – Jimmy Carter and I are running for president. “” What the candidate presents to the nation, there are two moments to consider. And the other is the speech.” “Extremism in defense of freedom -” “Let’s build peace.” “Let me be the bridge to a America that is only the unknown call myth. “” This is the largest audience they will have for their pitch to Americans. “” The crime and violence that is affecting our nation today – “” This is their chance to share their vision for the future of the country. “” – I can only fix it. “This year, Biden and Trump will give these speeches to, well, primarily a TV camera.” Giving a speech without an audience and without a the constant flow of feedback from the public looks forward to presenting a challenge to both presidential candidates. “What are the potential benefits for this?” One of the types of benefits of the pandemic is that people in, many of it country, still locked up at home.The question is: Are you going to revisit ‘The Sopranos’, or are you going to the convention?’ “I think there is a lot of fear and a lot of interest. And people really want to know how these different leaders will lead us through this pandemic and the economic crisis that is accompanying it.” But there is also potential. a very disadvantage. “You’re losing the energy you’re probably sending delegates to the world to start the fall campaign.” “For the president, what he has missed has shown this contrast from four years ago, when there was a lot of dissent against him.” “Stand and speak and tune your conscience.” “He could show that, four years later, the party is over with him.” “They call it Super for nothing for nothing!” “Joe Biden misses these great moments that would show someone who has trouble looking like a real candidate with a lot of enthusiasm behind him.” “Just this morning, we heard we were winning Maine, too.” “Yeah right!” Is it time to remember conventions altogether? “I think the conventions are less important this year than ever before – in part because not one of them happens in a normal way, but also because this election more than seems like a referendum on Donald Trump. It’s really Donald Trump versus Donald Trump. “You’ve lost your job! Get out!” ‘We’re just getting started. ‘And don’t expect the rest of the campaign to resume any sort of normality anytime soon. “Historically, the conventions mark the beginning of a really intense general election campaign cycle. But the subsequent activities after the convention – door-to-door interventions by those voters, how those voters actually cast their ballots – are all set to look extraordinarily different this year. “” That, we’re in my thin, stamp-sized yard in Washington. “” We’re in my backyard in Hollywood, California. “” And I’m currently at home in New York City, about to move to Delaware. go. “” It’s very hot.
