When was the last time you took time out of your schedule and cleaned your jewelry? Gold jewelry, although long lasting, tends to lose its luster due to wear. So it is important to clean it at regular intervals. Since polishing it into a jewelry store may not be possible right away in current circumstances, here are some ways to restore its shine from the comfort of your home, suggests Saurabh A Khandwal, director, Dhanvi Diamonds.
Soap and water method
Drink clean water in a bowl and add a pinch of liquid soap. Gently stir it and let your gold jewelry soak up. After 15 minutes, use a soft bristle brush or toothbrush to clean the jewelry. Be gentle with your cleaning and use a soft cloth to completely dry the piece.
Boiling water method
Place your gold jewelry in a large bowl and gently add boiling water over it. Make sure the part is completely submerged in water. Doing so will help remove oil, dirt and grime. Leave the jewelry piece in hot water until it cools down to room temperature. Then gently rub with a soft brush or cotton cloth.
Toothpaste method
Take a soft toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste and gently rub the piece of jewelry to remove dirt and dust. Alternatively, you can also use a soft cloth and remove oil and dirt. It is suggested to avoid this method for embedded parts.
Is it advisable to clean gold jewelry with alcohol?
According to experts, you can use it in much the same way as the soap and water method. All you need to do is put the gold jewelry into the alcohol solution and soak it for a few minutes. It will kill bacteria and dust, Khandwal suggests.
Helpful tips
*Never clean pieces of gold on an open drain. It may happen that you drop the item down the drain and lose it forever.
* Always be gentle while cleaning jewelry. If you rub the jewelry too much, it may fog or scratch.
* Gold jewelery with gem setting requires greater care and delicacy.
* When in doubt, bring gold jewelry for professional cleaning. This practice will help keep your pieces shiny and will also increase their life.
