The regional director of the World Health Organization says large numbers of coronaviruses across Europe should act as a “wake-up call”.

Hans Cluj said the number of new cases has more than doubled in the last two weeks in more than half of European member states.

“We are facing a very serious situation,” he said.

He was speaking of the worldwide number of infected crypts towards the 30 million mark.

More than 942,000 people have died since the coronavirus emerged in China late last year.

Speaking in Copenhagen on Thursday, Mr Klug said 300,000,000 new infections had been reported in Europe alone last week, with weekly cases reported during the first peak in March.

“Although these numbers reflect a more comprehensive test, they also show alarming rates of transmission across the region,” he told reporters.

Mr Kluge said the figures “should serve as a wake-up call for all of us”.

Hospital hospital admissions and deaths have not yet seen a similar increase, although Spain and France are showing an upward trend.

While young people – those who are infected are less likely to be severely affected – currently have the highest incidence of newly reported coronavirus cases, there is a risk of many more cases of serious illness if the virus spreads to older and more susceptible groups.

According to the WHO, there have been five million confirmed cases and more than 228,000 deaths in Europe since the epidemic began.

‘We can fight it again’

Mr Cluj said in a briefing on Thursday that the lockdown measures introduced in early spring and early summer have yielded clear results.

He said the June cases have come down to an all-time low. “September case numbers, however, should serve as a wake-up call for all of us.”

But he insisted that improved knowledge of the best ways to eradicate the virus had improved since the epidemic spread in Europe.

“We’ve fought it before and we can fight it again,” he said.

Earlier this week, Mr Cluj warned that Europe should be prepared to increase the number of deaths from coronavirus in October, October and November, warning: “It will become more difficult.”

What is the situation around Europe?
