Coronavirus updates: San Quentin cases explode with nearly 550 infected inmates

LAST June 26, 10:10 am Bay to Breakers, the centennial annual race in San Francisco, was canceled for 2020. In March, the race was rescheduled from May to September, and organizers cited the coronavirus as the reason for the postponement.

But on Friday, organizers say, “we have made the difficult decision to cancel the event live.” The race will now follow the example of other canceled marathons in the United States and “go virtual,” meaning that runners will independently register their races. Bay to Breakers will also refund registrations to those who choose not to participate in virtual execution.

June 26, 8:45 a.m. An outbreak in the San Quintín prison has now produced more than 500 cases of inmates inside the jail.

Inmates say social distancing has been impossible, and although many are trying to take precautions by wearing a mask and washing their hands regularly, infections are still spreading. An inmate says that prison alarms sound every time an inmate is brought to the medical area; Only Thursday, he added, it rang five times.

There have been no official deaths in the prison, although one man, Richard Stitely, 71, who was on death row, died on Wednesday. Inmates say he had been showing symptoms of COVID-19.

As of Friday morning, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reports 539 cases in jail.

June 26, 8:30 a.m. Santa Cruz will reopen its beaches starting Friday, in part due to the fact that locals will not stop visiting, and it has become difficult for police to enforce the closure.

“We expected to continue with the closure of the beach until after the weekend of July 4, but it is impossible for the police to continue to apply that closure, and people are no longer willing to be governed in that regard,” said the Official of Santa Cruz County Health Dr. Gail Newel said Thursday.

The beaches had previously been closed between 11 am and 5 pm, except those that crossed to access the water.

June 26, 8:15 a.m. The Muir Woods National Monument announced that the park will reopen on Monday after being closed since March due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, the reopening of the park will not make it work as usual. Park officials will limit the number of visitors each day.

While the park generally supports up to 4,000 cars per day by reservation, Muir Woods will only allocate 1,700 on Monday. Pedestrians and cyclists can enter the park without reservation.

Additionally, the Visitor Center will remain closed, although some park facilities, such as the restrooms and cafeteria, will be open.

June 26, 7:30 am Coronavirus cases in California have now passed the 200,000 mark, after the day that saw the highest daily total of new cases in the United States on Thursday.

The state reported a total of 5,052 positive tests on Thursday, exceeding the high threshold, Mercury News reported. California also added an additional 81 deaths, more than half of which occurred in Los Angeles County, bringing the death toll in the state to 5,804.

The state’s seven-day average for new cases also increased this week, to 4,780 per day, although the increase can also be attributed at least in part to the more widespread availability of evidence. Alameda, Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties averaged more cases than in the past few days.
