Coronavirus Tracking: Florida Breaks Single-Day Record, Adds More Than 11,400 New Cases


Below is a record of the day’s events in relation to the global coronavirus pandemic.

11am — The Florida Department of Health reports an additional 11,458 new cases on July 4, the highest number of cases reported in a single day. The state total is now 190,052. According to the department’s data, another 18 people have died, bringing the total number of deaths for Florida residents to 3,702.

10:00 am – It’s hard to imagine celebrating July 4th without fireworks. But if you’ve become a regular user of hand sanitizer in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, be careful – don’t use it before handling fireworks, as they both represent a dangerous and highly flammable combination. 9:15 am – The new Smyrna Beach police say the beaches reached their maximum capacity before 9 a.m. on Saturday when visitors flocked to the sand on July 4. If you plan to head to a beach, remember to practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others due to the coronavirus pandemic.

8:45 am – The country’s leading infectious disease expert said Thursday that the new coronavirus has mutated in a way that could help it replicate better and spread more easily.

8:00 am — Daytona International Speedway celebrates its first race since the coronavirus pandemic closed the world of sports.

The IMSA WeatherTech 240 Championship race will take place on July 4th. A limited number of fans will be allowed in the stands, but security measures will be taken.

7 am — A study from Florida Atlantic University showed the effectiveness of using different types of masks to fight coronavirus infection.

One thing the study made very clear was the importance of using a mask to stop the spread of COVID-19, but it went a step further by showing which masks were more effective than others.

6:00 am — The Florida Department of Health reported another 9,488 cases on Friday at the beginning of the weekend of July 4. This brings the total in the state to 178,594. 67 more deaths have been reported. There are now a total of 3,684 deaths in the state.
