Three Chicago hospitals, Northwestern, Rush and Stroger, are among the facilities around the world designed to take part in the trial.
Hospitals said they have not given a trial vaccine to anyone at this stage, but they are enrolling volunteers.
“We should rest like security guards are working in a place where we have to wait longer,” Rush’s leading researcher told ABC7.
It is not uncommon for a vaccine trial to be suspended when potential questions arise, health experts said.
“Someone is going to get something when you see thousands and thousands of people taking new doses of the vaccine,” said Dr. John Smith, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Chicago. Said Emily Land.
Landon is not part of the study, but said that although the Data Safety Monitoring Board has stopped the trial due to reports that volunteers have come down with spinal problems, according to the head of the NIH.
“We don’t want to continue the trial if we have a significant problem with a drug or vaccine,” Land explained. “We want to know about it, but we also don’t want to discriminate against investigators, so you have this data safety monitoring board and their job is to be as careful as possible.”
This was echoed on Wednesday at Kitpital Hill by the director of the National Institute of Health.
Dr. “Everyone who listens to this should be reassured,” said Francis Collins. “When we say we’ll focus on security first and there’s no compromise, here’s how it’s happening.”
AstraZeneca said it still hopes to “reduce the impact on the trial timeline.”
“We are working to expedite the review of a single event to minimize any potential impact on the trial timeline,” the company said in a statement.
The development came on the same day that AstraZeneca and eight other drug manufacturers made an unusual pledge to uphold the highest ethical and scientific standards in developing their vaccines.
Investigators will check the details of the disease and the person associated with it to see if there is a link. They will also look at the amount of vaccine received and the state of health.
Hopefully this event can be explained and it is not a risk for another. If so, the trail will resume soon.
“The determination that I’m just going to do the right thing because doing it is definitely part of what it means to be in medicine and to be in science.”
Phase 3 now has another vaccine trial, which is the final phase. In those tests the researchers will make sure they are not looking at similar issues.
The announcement also follows concerns that President Donald Trump will force the US Food and Drug Administration to approve the vaccine before it proves safe and effective.
The USA has invested billions of dollars in efforts to rapidly develop multiple vaccines against Covid-19. But public fears that a vaccine that is unsafe or ineffective can be devastating, thwarting efforts to vaccinate millions of Americans.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
