Consumer reports say Tesla op Topilot is ‘far second’ for GM technology

GM’s technology not only provides clear visual warnings, but uses pre-mapped route information to notify passengers in advance that they must resume control. Tesla’s approach either delivers either a loud warning or a subtle mark change when the topilot disintegrates, and it often has a sudden cutoff.

It was clearly not a win. GM had a tendency to be frustrated with handling the system, and Tesla had obvious advantages of ease of use. However, both performed better than many of their competitors. The next closest system was Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 (52), while luxury brands such as Audi (48), Mercedes (46) and BMW (44) also remained relatively weak. Safety advocate Volvo also scored a modest 41 runs.

We’ve asked Tesla for comment, but we’re not going to be thrilled with its enthusiastic history of results. Customer reports.

Whichever car you choose, studies suggest that semi-autonomy and other driver support features go a long way to being truly reliable. They can save you from the mental drain of focusing on long highway trips, but you still have to be prepared with very little warning.
