“It’s another reminder of the kind of people this president surrounds himself with, at this point they could almost start their own crime family,” said Comey, who was also the former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, where Bannon was charged. “It’s a very serious matter. Bannon, along with three others, was accused of accusing alleged donors of the “We Build The Wall” fundraising campaign, which demanded money for the private construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
“It’s a very serious fraud case with an enormous amount of money being laundered by innocent victims,” Comey added on CBS ‘”Face the Nation.” “That will increase potential penalties.”
‘You know he’s in trouble because the accusation explains it in such detail, including excerpts from texts. If you’s Steve Bannon [or] you’re his lawyers, you read this saying ‘I’m going down here. “Comey said.” I do not know what the next steps are for him and his co-defenders, but that is what I mean by ‘world of problems.’ “
CBS ‘Margaret Brennan also asked Comey about criticism of the FBI’s response in the House of Representatives’ intelligence report on the hacking of the Democratic National Commission’s servers. The criticism included the bureau failing to do more to warn DNC officials.
“That’s honest criticism,” Comey replied. “I think the time our people thought it was just telling an institution that the Russians were in your house was enough … no one expected this to be a normal intelligence meeting, it was an attempt at arming.”
