After several weeks of disagreements between the unions and the Presidency of the Republic, the set of the Legal Minimum Monthly Salary in Force was established by the president, Iván Duque, on the morning of this Tuesday.
According to the president, the figure that will govern next year will be $ 908,526 which, compared to $ 877,803 in 2020, represents an increase of 3.5%.
“For the first time in the history of Colombia and fulfilling a campaign promise, it will exceed, including the transportation subsidy, one million pesos. In total it will be located at $ 1,014,980. (SMMLV $ 908,526 + transportation assistance $ 106,454) ”, wrote Duque on his personal Twitter account.
In that last figure there was also a variation of $ 3,600, since during 2020 the transportation aid stood at $ 102,854. It should be remembered that, given the current situation caused by covid-19, thousands of companies continue in the telework mode, which is why they have changed the transport subsidy for a connectivity one.
From 2019 to 2020, the variation in the minimum wage was 6%, with which this remuneration went from $ 828,116 to $ 877,803 per month.
The government headed by Iván Duque failed to reach an agreement with the country’s employers and workers during the meetings of the Commission for the Agreement on Wage and Labor Policies, so the decision was left to the national authority.
Thus, the final amount was below the proposal of the workers and pensioners centrals who expressed that the SMMLV should remain at $ 1,000,000 and the transport or connectivity subsidy at $ 120,000 pesos, that is, an increase of around 13 % that the president described as unfeasible from the beginning of the talks. For their part, businessmen offered an increase of 2.7%.
President Duque affirmed that this increase is equivalent to more than double inflation by the end of 2020, which will be around 1.5%. “It is necessary to maintain the balance between purchasing power and protect and generate new jobs,” concluded the president.
New minimum wage for 2021. For the first time in the history of Colombia and fulfilling a campaign promise, it will exceed, including the transportation subsidy, one million pesos. In total it will be located at $ 1,014,980. (SMMLV $ 908,526 + transportation assistance $ 106,454).
