The image of two penguins cuddling while gazing at the lights on the docks of Melbourne, Australia, won the Community Choice Award at Oceanographic magazine’s 2020 Ocean Photography Awards.

Photographer Tobias Baumgaertner explained that getting the image “was difficult,” but he was lucky to take this beautiful moment.

He also said that a volunteer approached him and told him that the white woman was an old woman who had lost her partner and the same happened to the youngest on the left.

Since then, they meet regularly to console each other and stay together for hours watching the dancing lights of the city.Baumgaertner commented.

St Kilda Pier has a colony of approximately 1,400 penguins and these birds are the smallest penguin species there is, with an average height of 13 inches. They are mainly found on the coasts of southern Australia and New Zealand.

The photographer spent more than three nights with this colony of penguins until he was able to get this beautiful moment, which was undoubtedly worth the wait.
