Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 1 – Welcome to 2020

On Friday, Browns’ training 1 stepped into training. As we do every year, we will compile a summary of what happened before, during and after each practice, based on notes from the local media and the team.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report – Day 1 (14-14-20)

1. Another version of training camp: It’s a different world in 2020, with no fans allowed to camp due to the pandemic. Media is still allowed to attend, and the Browns also bring fans a 2-hour show (Browns Live) every day to bring fans closer to the action. The show is hosted by Nathan Zegura en Josh Cribbs.

2. Emphasis on team: We’re always looking for new images as themes at Browns’ training camp, and that was evident through a large “TEAM” banner for players to see from the outside every time they looked up.

Today was a non-padded practice day (no live contact), but helmets, spiders and shells were allowed, along with all the usual exercise activities.

3 JC Tretter Has surgery, opening door for Nick Harris: Before you practice, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that C is starting JC Tretter had minor knee surgery. He is expected to be ready for week 1, but the news is a bit concerning to hear. Usually, when you hear about these small knee surgeries, they take place at the beginning of training camp, but that is when camp begins in the final week of July. This year, camp begins mid-August.

It opens the door for rookie C Nick Harris winning many early reps with the official of the first team. Tretter, however, is still expected to be the starter, and with three or four new linemen on the starting depth table, it would have been nice to work the whole unit together.

4. Myles Garrett Issued day 1: Fresh off his new contract extension, DE Myles Garrett sat out the first day of training camp – even though he was still on the field. Garrett starts camp with a minor hamstring injury:

5. Faraway Media View: Once upon a time, the present media could run straight up to any field and get a close look at the field, drills, etc. This year, however, media seem to be pointing to a particular area, which means they have to deal with a lot of remote cameras, depending on the field where the team is training.

If the players as position groups are working on the closer field, then the media to be able to you still feel close to the action, as you can see over here, and in the next bullet point.

Drill of the day: There’s nothing unique about this drill, because it’s just the linemen who hit the sled. What I see is the non-team game: there are no cables to separate fans, so the drill starts right at the walkway where fans would normally run.

Game of the day: I think he feels healthy! On the first day of camp, QB saw one of the highlights Baker Mayfield beat WR Jarvis Landry for a long touchdown, with S Andrew Sendejo in coverage.

8. Long Snapping Nugget: Because of the pandemic, I mentioned a few weeks ago that teams should think about necessary COVID-related cases this season, and one of those things would be that the Browns need to train a backup long snapper. According to Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com, the Browns had backup FB Johnny Stanton worked on his long snaps.

9. The puppy pound lives on, clean! I had written beforehand that it was sad that fans could not see the Puppy Pound this year, but the team is still doing it virtually for 2020! Today’s puppy is “Barker Mayfield III. ”

10. Brownies: It’s a little sad – we can not talk about ticket registration this year as the other opportunities and ends of camp. … The Browns are running a 50/50 raffle during training camp this year. … owner of Browns Jimmy Haslam used to be outside of seeing practice. … Cribbs liked what he saw of WR JoJo Natson and WR Donovan Peoples-Jones as point-returners, as far as they approach the point and field. … S Sheldrick Redwine had a few interceptions. … at least in today’s practice, Alex Van Pelt sent in the game calls for the offense. … TE Austin Hooper and TE David Njoku saw working together with the official of the first team.

11. Next up: The Browns will be eliminated on Saturday. They will resume practice on Sunday, again without pads, before starting padding practices on Monday. Every practice day, Browns Live will air at 2 p.m. Practice itself begins at 2:25 PM ET.
