Clemson announced Friday that 14 soccer players tested positive for COVID-19 this week, raising the program count to 37 per week after 23 players tested positive upon returning to campus last week. The additional 14 positive cases are part of the 19 new cases reported this week for all athletes. He did not identify what other sports had been affected.

In total, Clemson’s reports show that 290 tests have been conducted among student-athletes, and 43 have yielded positive results. 18 of the 43 are still classified as “active” cases.

“As of June 26, there have been no hospitalizations for any individual at Clemson Athletics related to COVID-19, and approximately half of the cases have been asymptomatic,” Clemson said in a statement. Those who tested positive were isolated for a period of at least 10 days, and known close contacts were asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days. They are also disqualified from participating in voluntary activities during that period.

Clemson began his return to campus on June 1, and positive results were expected among players and staff alike. Between the two groups, 430 tests have been carried out, with the staff obtaining only four positive tests to date.

The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than 120,000 Americans in recent months. The South Carolina Department of Health reported 692 deaths in her state and confirmed more than 30,000 positive cases.
