On Monday, Christian Dior presented his Maria Grazia Chiuri Fall 2020 couture collection. But instead of presenting it on a catwalk, in front of an audience of clients, celebrities, publishers, stylists and influencers, in Paris, the line debuted online, as Couture Week moved to a fully digital format, due to constant Covid – 19 pandemic.
The presentation was twofold: The line of 37 looks was first presented through a short film directed by Matteo Garrone that premiered on Monday, and was then miniaturized into small mannequins arranged inside a trunk designed to resemble Dior’s headquarters. Avenue Montaigne, which will then travel around the world, according to WWD.
However, this alternative format is only temporary for the fashion house. Dior has been one of the few luxury brands to publicly announce efforts to revert to some version of the live events that define the traditional fashion calendar. It will host a Cruise 2021 presentation in Lecce, Italy later this month, with a few guests but no live audience, and hopes to follow through with a ready-to-wear clothing parade in the spring of 2021 in September during Week of the Paris fashion (which, as of now, is still on). Of course, all of this is subject to change.
Now About Clothes: The Fall 2020 Couture Collection was inspired by surreal artists including Lee Miller, Dora Maar, and Jacqueline Lamba. “Surreal images succeed in making visible what is invisible in itself,” Chiuri said in a statement. “I am interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way to exorcise uncertainty about the future.” That translates into references to nature (whether by color, texture, or design details), poetic silhouettes, and ethereal, draped fabrics.
