Chinese president proposes global QR code health system to boost travel amid epidemics


Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday proposed using the digital health code system as a “fast track” for streamlined travel between countries while calling for stronger international coordination to re-establish international coordination between coronavirus epidemics.

Xi addressed other world leaders at a virtual meeting of the G-20 Riyadh Summit when he said the QR code system could help travel by validating coronavirus test results internationally, the Sau China Morning Post reported.

According to a transcript obtained by Shea Outlet, “We need to standardize policies and establish a faster track to facilitate the systematic flow of people.”

A QR code is a type of barcode that can be scanned and processed by a smartphone. According to the paper, the green code indicates a healthy state while the yellow and red mean the person must be kept separate. Since February, China has been using the method to monitor the health status of its citizens and their travel records.

It was not immediately clear whether other countries would also participate in the system.

Xi also said that China is ready to help other countries in need of coronavirus vaccines as the country currently has five domestic candidates in five Phase III trials, according to a Reuters report.

Xi said China is ready to strengthen cooperation with other countries in research and development, production and distribution of vaccines. “We will fulfill our commitments, provide assistance and assistance to other developing countries, and work hard to make vaccines a public one that citizens of all countries can use and afford.”
