In a controversial vote, UDI councilor Miguel Abdo was elected as the new mayor of Estación Central, occupying the position left vacant by today’s Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado.

The opposition, which has five votes in the Council, lost in the second round, because Felipe Muñoz (IND ex PS) did not vote. The result unleashed anger in the opposition ranks.

“This commune is still in the hands of the right because of Felipe Muñoz. Traitors, traitors. Felipe Muñoz has betrayed the people, he voted for the right wing, he abstained, “accused DC councilor Robinson Valdebenito, reported 24 Horas.

For her part, the regional councilor Angélica Cid tweeted: “Today once again personal interests prevailed over the good of the commune. Thanks to abstention and by not acting as a bloc, the right continues to govern the central station mayor’s office.”

In the first ballot, Flores got three votes, like Abdo, while Felipe Muñoz (IND ex PS) two, so there was a second round between the first two.

In the new vote, Abdo obtained 3 votes and his contender 4, and Muñoz did not vote. But since the PPD did not reach an absolute majority, the position remained in the hands of the councilor because he won more votes in the 2016 election, where he was elected as a councilor.

In the 2016 elections, Abdo obtained 2,288 votes versus 1,795 votes for councilman PPD. The now new mayor of Estación Central will be in command until April 2021, the date on which the municipal elections will take place.

Harsh opposition statement

The situation of Muñoz, who has announced that he will go for the building seat in the next elections, prompted a harsh public statement from the opposition councilors.

“During the second round, Felipe Muñoz, independent councilor of the Broad Front, abstained from voting in the second round, favoring and giving way to the election of the UDI Miguel Abdo,” the text states.

“We reject the action of councilor Felipe Muñoz, who has betrayed the residents of Estación Central, and the majority of the commune by handing over the commune to the UDI with his decision,” concludes the statement also signed by Felipe Zavala (PC) and Patricio González (DC)
