This Monday, December 14, the total solar eclipse, natural phenomenon expected by specialists in astronomy and amateurs, due to the infrequency with which they occur.
This event occurs when the alignment is generated between the Sun, the Moon and the Earth, from where it will be seen how the natural satellite completely covers the star, causing a total blackout (umbra) in certain sectors of the planet.
Either totally or partially, the eclipse can be observed from French Polynesia, in the westernmost area of Antarctica, in the continental and insular territory of Chile, in Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, parts of Peru, Ecuador and Brazil, on islands in the Atlantic and in the southwestern region of Africa.
How will it look in the different regions of Chile?
Since it was known that the phenomenon would occur, the authorities have kept Chileans informed about the exact time it will occur, the measures to take to see it and how it can be seen in the different regions of the country.
In this sense, they specified that the visibility by regions will be:
- 26% in the Arica and Parinacota Region
- 31% Tarapacá Region
- 42% Region of Antofagasta
- 55% Atacama Region
- 66% Coquimbo Region
- 78% Valparaíso Region
- 78% Metropolitan Region
- 81% O’Higgins Region
- 87% Maule Region
- 92% Ñuble Region
- 94% Biobío Region
- 100% in the region of La Araucanía
- 100% in the Los Ríos region
- 93% Los Lagos Region
- 79% Aysén Region
- 58 and 54% Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica.
What time is the eclipse?
According to specialists, the phenomenon will develop in a relatively specific schedule, which will vary in a few minutes, depending on where one is located.
In the case of Chile, it will last approximately three hours and, at least in the area where it can be fully appreciated, the eclipse will begin at 11:37 a.m., reaching its culmination point from 1:00 p.m. hours.
Meanwhile, the duration of total darkness, when the Moon completely covers the sunlight and casts a shadow on the Earth, will be between two to three minutes, also depending on the area in which you observe.

- Puerto Saavedra: 1:00 p.m. to 1:02 p.m.
- Temuco: 1:02 p.m. to 1:03 p.m.
- Villarrica: 1:02 p.m. to 1:04 p.m.
- Pucón: 1:03 p.m. to 1:05 p.m.
- Argentina: 1:05 p.m. (Neuquén) 1:13 p.m. (Río Negro)
