The World Health Organization (WHO) “will not endorse” a vaccine against the new coronavirus if it is not safe and effective, stated on Friday its CEO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“We have a few that are promising. They will not be used until it has been established that they are effective and safe, that is what I would like to guarantee to the world ”, declared the head of the WHO at a press conference.

According to the WHO, There are 176 ongoing vaccine projects in the world, of which 34 are in clinical trials, which means that they began to be tested on humans. Among these, eight are in phase three, the most advanced.

The vaccine race has unleashed unbridled competition between states, which are contributing billions of dollars to the bid, and also from pharmaceutical companies, giants in the sector or new firms, ready to take the glory of being the pioneer.

The Lancet magazine published a preliminary study on the Russian vaccine on Friday that showed that it develops an immune response without serious undesirable effects.

However, other voices have expressed skepticism, particularly in Germany and the United States, that cast doubt on the efficacy of the vaccine known as Sputnik V.

The WHO recommends on the other hand “the systematic use of corticosteroids for patients suffering from a severe or critical form of covid-19” since it has been shown that they reduce the mortality of the pandemic.

A report published on Friday in the medical journal BMJ details the results of various tests and nevertheless warns that the use of these corticosteroids is not recommended in the case of patients with mild symptoms.
