The official date for the celebration of Mother’s Day is May 10, and just this 2020 the date will coincide.
In Chile it will be commemorated next Sunday, May 10.
Why is Mother’s Day celebrated?
The origins of this celebration come from the Egyptian civilization, where the Goddess Isis, known as the “Great Mother” was the object of worship and tribute. In ancient Greece she was the Goddess Rea, mother of the Gods of Olympus, and in the Roman Empire the Goddess Cybele, the Mother Goddess, was worshiped.
Catholicism in Europe transformed these celebrations in honor of the mother goddesses and transferred it to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus of Nazareth. On December 8, 1954, Pope Pius IX declared that on this date Mother’s Day would be celebrated in honor of the Immaculate Conception. In fact, in some countries, such as Panama, Mother’s Day is still celebrated on December 8.
Meanwhile, in the United States, two women fought for the recognition of Mother’s Day. It was the poet and activist Julia Ward Howe and Anna Reeves Jarvis. The latter spearheaded an active campaign that spread throughout the United States. And finally it had results. American President Wilson Woodrow officially declared in 1914 that the Mother’s Day it would be celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
Finally, it is in 1965 when Mother’s Day moves to the first Sunday in May, as we know it today.
