An imposing 23-meter tall Norwegian fir arrived this Saturday at Rockefeller Center in New York City to be used as one of the most famous Christmas trees in the world.
NBC’s “Today” show showed the tree being transported by truck early Saturday morning.
Later, a crane lifted the tree into its final place.
The tree will be decorated in the coming weeks and its more than 8 kilometers of lights will be turned on in a ceremony at 7 in the afternoon. Dec. 2, according to NBC, which broadcasts the event.
In-person viewers will not be allowed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the network added.
The tree was donated by Al Dick of Daddy Al’s General Store in Oneonta, in downtown New York.
Tishman Speyer, the company that owns Rockefeller Center, has said it is especially proud to uphold the tree tradition this year.
The pandemic has caused the cancellation of some other New York Christmas customs, such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
Greta and the death of the trees
At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2020, environmentalist Greta Thunberg made her defense on behalf of the global environmental movement, demanding not to delay decision-making by governments. “When we tell them to panic, we don’t tell them to do what they did before,” Thunberg said.
“We are not telling them to trust technologies that don’t even exist today and that science says may never exist. We are not telling them to keep talking about zero emissions or carbon neutrality by cheating with numbers. We don’t tell them to offset their (CO2) emissions just by paying someone to plant trees somewhere like Africa while at the same time forests like the Amazon are slaughtered, ”the activist continued.
“Planting trees is good, of course, but it is not close to being enough and it cannot replace the real mitigation of damage to nature,” Greta warned.
“I wonder, what will you say to your children that was the reason for failing and leaving them facing the climatic chaos that you knowingly brought them?”
