The expert in entomology and academic of the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences of the University of Chile, Tomislav Curkovic, Clarified that the large number of moths present in the central area of the country is due to the fact that high temperatures have accelerated the birth cycle of these insects.
As published What’s up, Curkovic commented that “in general all organisms have cycles. In the case of insects, their cycle goes from the egg, then a worm or larva that grows to become a chrysalis, and later reaches adulthood, which is its most visible form. . And this happens every year because the cycles are always the same. The only difference is that sometimes there are more cycles, and others there are fewer. “
These insects, according to Curkovic, develop faster depending on the heat, with more accelerated cycles in hot years.
“What is happening now is that the adults of these more robust moths are emerging, and will occur again in the summer. Many of these moths have between one and three life cycles, ranging from one to two months before they become adults, up to two weeks after that, when they die. But it depends on the species. The largest moths have one cycle or generation per year, so we won’t see them again until 2021“, said.
The expert indicated that “not all moths hatch at the same time. A period of two or three weeks of hatching passes, so between the beginning and the end, we will be seeing moths for a month. But they only live a couple of weeks in the nature”.
“Many moths in their adult state are not harmful, and in Chile there is no harm, beyond people who are afraid of them because of their fluttering, and because they are somewhat clumsy, “said the entomologist, assuring that they are not disease vectors for pets, that they can play with them or ingest them.
