During this week, The Public Health Institute (ISP) approved in Chile the use of the coronavirus vaccine from the Pfizer and BioNTech laboratories, which will be administered to people from the age of 16.

Regarding the immunization process, the general manager of Pfizer in Chile, Marta Diez, affirmed that they assume that vaccinations could begin the same day the formula arrives in the country.

In conversation with Third, the representative of the laboratory in the country assured that “the defrosting of the vaccine for its inoculation is a short period. The vials (bottles) are small and the volume in there thaws very quickly. This is in less than three or four hours ”.

“What is going to take more time is the logistics once you land: the customs part, taking them out and transferring them to the government reception point and the vaccination point. We assume that it should be the same day of arrival, as defined by the National Immunization Plan (PNI) ”, he added.

However, Ten warned that it is unlikely that the vaccine arrived in the country this Monday, and that the 20 thousand doses of the first shipment will arrive from Belgium, although the next games will arrive both from this European nation and from the United States.

Regarding the logistics of transporting immunizations throughout the country, the laboratory indicated that “those first doses in particular will be in charge of the government. President Sebastián Piñera spoke that an important part of the doses would be sent to Biobío, La Araucanía and Magallanes, and that distribution will be made by the government with an air operator that they decide ”.

In addition, Diez specified that for future doses “we can take care of the logistics operator with which we are working, which is DHL. I guess because of the urgency, they want to take care of those first doses ”.

Finally, when asked whether it is possible for Chile to buy more doses of the vaccine, the Pfizer representative stated that “the contract does not consider an extension, but it is always possible to extend it. Another annex can be made if the government decides to have or need more vaccines within the next year ”.

But during the first six months of 2021 it will be difficult to have more doses, because they are the ones that are already very committed for that entire period. We can discuss it, but Chile has contracts with several other producers ”, he settled.
