Almost a year after winning a motion of confidence, the Peruvian President, Martin Vizcarra, again faces a serious political crisis, which could lead to his dismissal. It all started this Thursday, when in Congress some audios were released in which he asked advisers to lie in an investigation by the Legislative Assembly on his relationship with a former collaborator investigated for irregular contracts.
Tonight, the Peruvian president referred to this situation and affirmed that it is “a hoax that seeks to destabilize democracy.”
“Once again the country has witnessed a vile attempt to destabilize not only the government, but also the institutionality and democracy by a group with clear subaltern interests using the same ‘Montesinist’ practices, they have illegally obtained a private conversation where there is nothing illegal. The only thing illegal is the use of a clandestine recording presented in a staging prepared as in the best times of Vladimiro Montesinos “, Vizcarra began in his speech.
Although the President confirmed that the conversation existed, which he called “internal conversations that take place in any institution”, he said that “the audio was maliciously edited and manipulated” to remove it from context.
In addition, he was clear in stating that he will not resign. “I am not going to resign, I am not running,” he emphasized, and stated that the only thing illegal “is the use of a clandestine recording presented in a staging prepared as in the best times of Vladimiro Montesinos.”
The Head of State, who took office on March 23, 2018 after the resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, indicated that all this “is a hoax that seeks to destabilize democracy, to take control of the government, to allow the reelection of congressmen, to postpone elections, and guarantee their electoral triumph. They want to violate the popular will. These characters are not interested in the country or democracy. They only want to take over the government, to guarantee their control, until 2026. We are facing a plot against democracy ” .
In the recordings, released by Congressman Edgard Alarcón (Union for Peru), participate Karem Roca Luque, former administrative assistant of the Presidential Office; and Mirian Morales Córdova, Secretary General of the Presidency, together with the president. In the audios it is shown that these advisers mention to Vizcarra the income to the presidential palace of the singer Richard Cisneros, known as Richard Swing, whom the government hired as a lecturer and entertainer.
The case exploded in May, when the press discovered that the Ministry of Culture had offered allegedly irregular contracts for US $ 50,000 to Cisneros, a little-known artist in the local environment in the midst of a pandemic.
The broadcasting of the audios led the President of Congress to convene a session of party spokespersons to assess whether they are requesting an investigative commission or are promoting their dismissal due to moral incapacity.
It is not the first time that Vizcarra has clashes with Congress. Both powers are facing each other over the approval of a political reform promoted by the government, which would leave candidates convicted by the courts out of the race.
