In November of previous years, the names of the confirmed artists were already being given for the Viña del Mar Festival the following year. Now, in times of a pandemic, what will be done has not yet been defined. Although there was a breakthrough, Municipality Commission in charge of the contest, headed by the mayor Virginia Reginato, rejected the possibility of doing it in person and opens up to the option of having a different version.

“We are in November and the sanitary conditions they still prevent massive events and above all international, “acknowledged the mayor after the commission meeting that took place last Tuesday. In the statement, Reginato assumes that health is unfeasible to perform the show as it has been done so far. The country is still in a state of exception, subject to regulations and strict protocols established by the health authority, which, like experts, consider that the restrictions will remain for next summer given the development that shows the pandemic by covid 19.

In this context, the Municipality’s concession contract with TELEVISION Y Channel 13 would take advantage of the force majeure figure, which the television stations had alluded to a couple of weeks ago in a letter requesting not to hold the 2021 contest. That is why it was asked to Comptroller who will review the case, since they are contemplated millionaire fines in case it is not done.

But the Municipality hopes to reach an agreement and even proposes the idea that television stations do a special program focused on Viña del Mar, in order to reactivate the economy of the area that has been hit by the pandemic.

“Faced with this request for suspension made by both Channel 13 and TVN, the municipality has developed alternative formulas so that, in common agreement with the concession channels, the Viña Festival continue to fulfill your important role as promoter of the commune as a tourist city and also consider promotional actions to support the reactivation of trade and tourism services, because the country is still in a state of exception ”, explained the authority, with the idea that some other type of online broadcast of the event be carried out.

Although, according to sources within the channels, this approach is not within the terms of the tender, which stipulates earnings from ticket sales. In this sense, both TVN and Channel 13 consider that performing another type of issuance requires another contract. That is why next Tuesday the 10th the executives will meet with the Municipality commission to discuss the options.

Sandro Puebla, Councilor of the Garden City and member of the commission, says that on Tuesday they expect to to a good deal after talking to channel executives.
