As has become “custom” on Fridays, some 400 people protested during the afternoon in the sector where clashes with Carabineros were recorded every time the demonstrators were dispersed by the Forces of Order.

However, after 8:30 p.m. and with no police in sight, a group of antisocials set tires at the base of the statue to General Baquedano, which caused large flames of fire to engulf the historic monument.

About 20 minutes later, after the dispersion of the subjects by Carabineros personnel, a water-gun car put out the flames.

Carabineros reported that it has arrested 63 people for disorders in the Alameda axis, while seven police officers were injured.

“There was a large amount of disorder in the Alameda axis, between Portugal and even the Plaza Baquedano sector. The incidents took place throughout the afternoon and made Public Order personnel intervene,” said the head of the Western Metropolitan Area of ​​the Carabineros , General Enrique Monrás.

DEFENSE MINISTER CONDEMNED “AFRENTA” AGAINST BAQUEDANO

The Minister of Defense, Baldo prokurica, condemned the burning of the statue of General Baquedano, marking it as “affront”.
